Edward Pointer 1834-1906 Enlisted April 1861 age 23, Co H 12th Inf Reg NY ....
and he mustered out May 1863 at Elmira NY.
Then Edward Pointer (my ancestor) (will
explain more following his service data), enliste 1863 age 25 in Co A 15th
Calvary Reg NY; he became full Lt. 2nd class effective March 7, 1865.
Edward Pointer then transferred to Co L 2nd
Prov Cav NY; and mustered out with Co L 2nd Prov'l Cav Reg NY on August 9,
1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.
Now, for some history of Edward Pointer.
Edward Pointer was born December 1834 or 1837 in England (believe Kent,
Eng) and immigrated to America in 1859 or so. Edward is found living
with James (1833-97) and Mary Smith, in 1860, at Marcellus NY (Onondaga
Co). He is also found there in 1865. And then, he is
found in 1900, 1905 at Bath NY. Lt. Edward Pointer died in
1906 at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Bath NY (Steuben Co).
I have been to his gravesite and am currently
seeking more info on this man; Chaplain Raymond W. LeMay from Albany NY SUVCW
Camp Willard 154 (Sons of Union Veterans/Civil War) directed me to your
website which I have explored ~ I have most truly enjoyed going
through it (fine job, sir!). And, so here I am as a descendant
of Edward Pointer, contacting you. The Chaplain mentioned a Ken
Colomba as webmaster.
Edward Pointer is found in 1880 in Albany NY
2nd ward with his wife, Magdalena.
Edward Pointer had at least 3 children:
I am told that he had a Charles and an Elenore (cannot find or verify
these two). But, the other child of his, Anna Elizabeth
Pointer is my great grama 1858-1939 (wife of Charles Wm White
1847-1923) who had also 3 children: Andrew White b 1891 who
married Gertrude B Cornell; Raymond Lester White b 1895 who married
Edna M Smith; and Anna Louise White 1899-1976 who married William Hymes
Teeter 1883-1965 (my grandparents).
The Chaplain of Albany has sent me copy of
Edward Pointer's application for a pension which I shall pursue as well as
the NARA for Edward Pointer's other records.
I thought you might be interested in knowing
that one of your men has been found for your records and that you may also
be of some help to me in some way.
I can put your site (link) on mine.
My website is:
I have also seen a Marcellus Pointer listed in
Co H per Cornell University records...I am wondering if this is my Edward
Pointer's middle name or perhaps that of his wife as a maiden name.
I did find that an Edward Painter (note the
spelling with an "a") in Marcellus NY (Onondaga Co) who
received lands in Cicero NY Lot # 15 ~ did find some Paynters that had
land there in 1829 or so.
I would appreciate any word from you.
Thanks for the great website you have and
thank you for any exchange of info.
Am attaching Ed Pointer's pension AP.
God Bless!
