I have returned to your site after a year or more. I am the granddaughter (that's right - granddaughter) of Alonzo Ruscher who appears to have lied about his age to enlist. I know little about him as he died in 1912. I have enjoyed reading about the 15th. Thanks!

Am G-grandson of Sgt Sylvester Primmer, a 15th member, I think from Elmira NY. A farmboy, originally in 108th NY Infantry. He was shot through the chest in their first attack against the sunken road at Antietam, mustered out due to wound. About a year later, joined the 15th. Wounded less severely twice more. Present at Appamatox I presume. Studied in Germany after the war, married a Southern girl, German professor @ UT, died 1911, buried Austin,TX.

I am a proud descendant of Walter W. Smith, Pvt., Co. E 15th NY Cav. Vols. he and his brother both served in Co. E. The brother Alfred was captured at Romney. W. Va. and spent time in a rebel prison. My grt-grandfather Walter lived in the Lockport area, was born in England and was wounded at Five Forks (shot thru the heel). His pension record also states that he crushed a finger while tearing up rails at Bumpus Station (not sure where that was). I just visited Appomattox C. H. for the first time and can highly recommend the place. Love to hear from others about the reg't.

15th CAV--My family is delighted to have found this site! My Mother has been searching the family history and has tracked their arrival back to 1620 and their service in the Revolutionary War. She found that part of the family runs through a "Charles Humpjrey Lyon" who served in the Civil War. Yup, he was 1stLT to Major with 15th Cav Company M. You even have the report of his wounding on November 1, 1864 at Green Spring Run Station, VA. We have some NYC news paper articles that we will forward about his reports from the field, the loss of an officer, and presentation of a sword, which we will forward. To round out the family, my oldest son was a Cav Scout and then commissioned in the Army, served with First CAV in Iraq (OIF), got his bronze spurs, did a second tour with an infantry unit assigned to the USMC in Ramadi, and unfortunately received his second Purple Heart from an IED. Now is a Capt in Army Reserve and my other son is a cadet at West Point hoping to branch CAV. Look forward to seeing you in the field. Regards, John M. Carbone, Esq. New Jersey

Good to find this! My maternal great-great grandfather was George Wesley Linton of H or I Company. Luckily, he got out from under Custer's command before the Indian Wars.

I own and reside in the home from which Captain Michael Auer was captured by Colonel Mosby in 1864. I would greatly appreciate any information or leads you could provide regarding Captain Auer to include photos.

Thank you,

Bill Hammack

Was searching the web for bugle calls when I came across your site. It's good to see that the original cavalryman will not be forgotten, as the modern cavalry is nothing like the ancestor's. I was in the 3rd Armored Cavalry in Germany[1966-Brave Rifles] and got my taste of modern times. During a regimental parade for Pres. DeGaulle we stood by our steeds[M-60A1 tanks] and the loudspeakers blared out" Prepare to mount[we put our hands on the tank]- MOUNT![climbed up and inside]. The order was then given,"Column's, Left Turn by Squadrons , Forward.....MARCH!. That's close anyway. We had practiced for a week prior and on the German news that night we looked pretty GOOD! Whole regiment of tanks manuvering in unison is awe inspiring. We got a commendation because we made our regimental commander look good to everybody.
Sorry 'bout that. Guess that was pretty boring to read, but to an eighteen old boy from Alabama, I felt good and wanted to share it with fellow cavalrymen.
Boots and Saddles Troopers!
