Report from Antietam

This years largest reenactment was the 135th Anniversary Battle of Antietam held on September 12 thru 14, 1997, in Sharpsburg, Maryland.  The 15th NYVC was represented by Don Levesque, and the Slaughter brothers.  They were among an estimated 16,000 other re-enactors for the 3 day event.  Those who attended had claimed they had a great time and made many new friends.  Many who attended summed it up with simply "you should have been there".

The 15th participated in a living history, and skirmish over the weekend at this 200 year old site in Campbell Hall, New York. This event was held in conjunction with an annual Boy Scout Jamboree which was attended by well over 4,000 scouts. Although the weather did not cooperate Saturday, with a steady drizzle, Sunday was beautiful, and the crowds where very appreciative of the fortitude the units displayed.

Hillside Cemetery Project

Recently the 15th NYVC Co. L, 124th NYVI, and other veteran organizations helped in uncovering more tombstones at the Cemetery. To our greatest surprise we made the Sunday Times Herald Record of Middletown, NY. The event was very moving and caused us to reflect on ourselves in very positive ways. After a small ceremony, we went back to look at the graves of two of our regimental officers, who are buried there.

American Legion Vice Commander for Orange County, Frank Coleman, has secured the backing of our unit in aiding him with the Hillside Project. Mr. Coleman is a resident of Middletown, NY, and lives next door to Hill Side Cemetery and spear heads this project. With the help of others he plans to restore neglected grave markers of Civil War veterans at the Cemetery.

Oradell 1996 Encampment (15th Wins Honors)

The 15th set up an encampment, along with many other Civil War and Revolutionary War re-enactors at this recent event for the community middle schools. The 15th won the best encampment portrayal for the event.

Everyone was very proud of this accomplishment in light of the fact that we are a relatively new group, and the unit fielded a number of fresh fish. All look forward to this coming season.

Warwick Applefest'96

The 15th NYVC Co. L was invited to attend Applefest 95 in Warwick, New York. This event is sponsored by the town Chamber of Commerce and includes various crafts, and food vendors along with some nonprofit organizations. It attracts up to 40,000 people in one day. This presented a great opportunity for exposure for the 15th. A small encampment was setup in historic Lewis Park ideally located in the center of town. We received great reviews from all visiting and enjoyed answering the many questions asked about our troop and the Civil War.
