Pvt. Hugh McGrady Grave Rededication

 Sunday May 6, 2007

Suffern, NY

Pvt. McGrady is a Civil War Veteran buried at the Gates of Paradise Cemetery, Hillburn, NY.  He first enlisted with the 124th New York State Volunteers (Orange Blossoms), but after a short time his true age was revealed and was mustered out of the unit.  Afterwards, he attempted to enlist again but with the 5th New York Volunteer Cavalry, where he served under this unit until the end of the war.  After the Civil War he returned to his home in Rockland County.

Recently Pvt. McGrady’s great-great grandson, Suffern Police Chief Clark Osborn, found the grave marker of Pvt. McGrady in damaged and deteriorating condition.  A new grave marker has been acquired from the U.S. Government, to replace with honor the original marker.

Sunday, May 6, 2007, will be Pvt. Hugh McGrady Day in Suffern, NY.  The highlight of the day will be the rededication of Pvt. McGrady’s grave marker at 1:30pm in Hillburn, NY.  Afterwards all participants are encouraged to go to the Suffern Community Center for refreshments.  At the Community Center, information on Pvt. McGrady will be on display. Civil War Organizations can set up displays and interact with the public.

This is a great opportunity for all active Union Reenactment Units and other American Civil War organizations to commemorate this veteran who so gallantly at a young age served his country in two distinguished units.

Mark your calendar and please join us in honoring Pvt. Hugh McGrady on Sunday, May 6, 2007.
